My Opinion About HomegrownVideo:
Let's talk about definition of the word "amateur", what does it stand for in the porn world? In the ideal case, an amateur should pose nude or fuck in front the camera, just for his/her personal pleasure, with no money being involved. Once he/she starts to act in porn movies on a regular basis, with the intention of making money off of it, they're not amateurs anymore. Taking this into consideration, the only true amateur porn material would have to be homemade, by the performers themselves or maybe by some of their friends. So basically, almost all "amateur paysites" are not amateur at all, with a very limited number of exceptions still existing.
HomeGrownVideo.Com is one of these exceptions, and the name of the site suggests it - homegrown or homemade, sounds almost the same, doesn't it? Homegrown Video is a company that started by publishing amateur swingers movies back in 1982 and about 6 years ago expanded to the web. Going through a lot of changes and improvements over the years, but still specializing in genuine amateur porn and erotica. These guys fulfill my definition of amateur porn, bringing us real amateur footage submitted by the performers themselves.
Majority of the pics and videos you will get to see here, are original personal flicks, that were not made with money in mind. Sure, the homegrown guys buy this footage from the performers, which they have to do because of copyright issues and they have to motivate the owners somehow :-) But like I said, this is the real thing, true amateur stuff. It's also very obvious on the quality, some of the pics or videos are definitely shot by photography noobs :-)
If I understand it correctly, the main concept of the site itself is like this : amateur couples, swingers or just simple perverts ... submit their personal erotic movies or pics to the site owners, who decide whether it's worth buying them out or now. The better ones are purchased and published on the site, and the best performers are then asked to cooperate more and act in a movie produced by HomeGrown Video. These homegrown productions are also available on the site btw.
As you can imagine, the model base represents all imaginable human types, as is to be expected with a site like this. There are blondes, brunettes, redheads ... there are girls I'd like to get my hands on just as there is a ton of girls I wouldn't touch even when totally drunk :-) Whatever your taste, there will be a ton of persons matching your preferences. The same goes for content quality, it varies a lot, based on the skills of particular "photographer". I'm not going into details here, as it's pointless. You know what to expect on a site like this one, plenty of superb shot pics, plenty of photos that are awful in quality ... but these are true amateur pics that can't be compared to pro-studio work. Anyways, the content they take now is in much better quality than in the past, so even these "negatives" will weed out with time.
HomeGrown Video is a huge site, offering more than 1900 picture galleries totaling over 110 000 pictures and more than 1400 movies that are all very long (up to 45 minutes or even more). Needles to say all this stuff is exclusive to Home Grown, unless you know the performers in personal, and watch their movies with them :-) Besides the pics and videos, there is erotic literature to be found, msg board, extra content (leased feeds), toy and video store, personals, cams/live shows and plenty of other features to waste your time with.
Given you are an amateur porn fan, you're going to love this site, that is a fact, but let me address the negatives also, as there are some for sure. First, the site organization is not the best, there is a heavy use of frames in place, which I don't like. For example, when browsing a gallery, the thumbnails are shown in the left frame, while the pics load in the right frame. In case of a big picture, you have to scroll a bit, as the left frame takes up a lot of space. I also didn't like the ton of "text boxes" they have on the site, again with limited space which means a lot more scrolling. This all is partially cause by the fact that they optimize for 800*600, which doesn't leave a lot of space for use. These navigational problems can be overcome however, so it's not a huge problem for me.
A bigger negative is the absence of downloads, all videos are in streaming format. Their quality is also limited, the best you can get are WMV's encoded at 300Kbit/s. However, for such low bitrate, the movies are excellent. And as far as the downloads go, I know why they're not allowing members to download the movies, it's sort of protection for the movie submitters, this way they're granted a limited level of privacy, as they're personal movies are not going to circulate the web.
The last negative I can think of is that there is a rather small amount of pro models or established web girls present on the site - it's probably sort of advertisement for these girls, but they could have spared it. They don't go well with the real life amateur models that build the core of this site. Ok, time to end this review now, it's way too long already, but I simply had to make a long one for this site, there was a lot to write about here.
Final Verdict:
HomeGrownVideo.Com is a must for any true amateur porn fan. Real footage, shot and performed by real people just like you and me, this is something you don't see on a lot of sites. The site has some negatives, but majority of them have to do with the nature of the site - sometimes low quality, no downloads and the other things I mentioned. However, for true amateur movies and pics, you'll have hard time finding a better site. Highly recommended despites the higher membership price.
